New sustainable packaging COPEMAR

We have redesigned our packaging, becoming one of the first companies in the sector to exclusively use the most eco-friendly boxes.

COPEMAR’s corrugated cardboard packaging is made from high-quality, raw-coloured recycled paper that ensures moisture resistance, minimising the risk of box deformation and pallet collapse.

They are easy to recycle, safe for people and the environment, with low environmental impact, and made from recycled materials.

Compared to the two types of white recycled paper used for corrugated cardboard production, raw-coloured recycled paper is the most “basic.” The raw material doesn’t require pre-selection, uses fewer chemicals, and consumes less energy.

The recycled paper-based solutions we use, thanks to the latest manufacturing technology, enable more sustainable use of raw materials, a reduction in CO2 emissions, and energy savings, turning each product into an example of a circular economy.

Ink: Another Element That Affects the Sustainability of Cardboard Boxes

Although often overlooked, ink is another factor that determines how easily cardboard boxes can be recycled. Most boxes used are printed, and depending on the technique applied, this makes the box more or less recyclable.

The primary printing technique used is called flexography. This technology relies on liquid inks that dry quickly and adhere to the surface of the packaging using rubber printing plates.
The inks are composed of 35% resins, 15% pigments, and 50% water.

  • Resins: Resins are synthetic, acrylic. Until recently, they were mostly petroleum-based, but fortunately, a large percentage now comes from plant-based, renewable sources, making them much more sustainable.
  • Pigments: Like resins, pigments have also evolved. The pigments we currently use no longer contain heavy metals. This change has been made directly by the industry, as EUPIA (European Ink Association) no longer allows the use of such pigments.
  • Water: In water-based inks for cardboard, the amount of volatile compounds is less than 1%, making this an option that makes cardboard more sustainable. In the case of plastic, this amount increases to achieve faster printing speeds.
